FAQs
When does a catalog make sense vs a booklet?
A catalog is a booklet whose primary job is to sell product. Booklets sell anything (programs, reports, manuals). Use the catalog frame when you have 24+ pages of product listings, when you need consistent grid layouts and SKU information, and when the print run is larger (250+). Anything under 24 pages or non-product is usually better treated as a general booklet.
What is the right page count for a product catalog?
Most product catalogs land between 24 and 64 pages. Under 24 pages, a brochure or saddle-stitched booklet is more cost-effective. Over 64 pages, perfect binding becomes the right choice for shelf appearance and durability. Page count has to be a multiple of 4.
Should the cover stock be different from the body?
Yes. Catalogs work best with a heavier cover (100lb gloss cover or 80lb silk cover) over a lighter body (80lb or 100lb silk text). The heavier cover survives shipping and handling. The lighter body keeps the book flat and the total weight reasonable for mailing.
Can I mail a printed catalog directly to customers?
Yes. Catalogs can be mailed via USPS Marketing Mail (formerly Standard Mail). Mailing class and rate depend on weight and quantity. We print the catalog and prep it for handoff to a mail-house partner if you want full induction handled.
What turnaround should I plan for a 32-page catalog of 500?
Print and bindery is 7 business days or less from approved proof. Add 2-3 days for any mailing prep. So plan on 9-12 days from final file approval to delivered cartons. If you need it faster, ask before you order; some configurations support rush.
