Soft-Touch Laminate Explained.
By Long Island Custom Printing · Huntington, NY · Updated May 2026
The finish that turns a business card into an experience. Here is what it is, when to use it, and what it costs.
TL;DR
Soft-touch is a specialty matte lamination film with a velvet or suede-like tactile surface. It is bonded to a thick card stock (typically 16pt or 18pt) after printing, and it transforms how the card feels in the hand. The premium feel makes it a fixture of luxury real estate, high-end agencies, hospitality, attorneys, and executive cards. It costs more than AQ or standard matte lamination, takes pen ink poorly, and shows faint fingerprints on dark designs. When the card matters, soft-touch is worth it.
What is soft-touch laminate?
Soft-touch is a specialty laminate film — a thin sheet of plastic, typically polypropylene or polyester — engineered with a microscopically textured surface that mimics the feel of velvet or peach skin. After your card is printed, the soft-touch film is heat-bonded to the front, back, or both sides of the sheet. The result is a card that feels meaningfully different the moment someone takes it.
Visually, soft-touch looks like a deep matte finish. The colors below the laminate appear slightly muted and richer compared to an uncoated print, similar to how an oiled wood floor looks compared to a raw board. The dramatic difference is what your fingers feel, not what your eye sees.
When to use soft-touch
- Luxury real estate listings. The listing card or just-listed mailer is part of the marketing of an expensive property. Soft-touch communicates the same quality tier as the home.
- Premium consumer brands. Skincare, spirits, fashion, and curated retail use soft-touch on cards, hangtags, and packaging inserts.
- Hospitality concierge. Hotels, private members' clubs, and high-end restaurants signal the experience through every touchpoint, including the card.
- Executive and partner cards. For senior roles in legal, finance, and consulting, soft-touch is the unspoken standard.
- Design-led agencies and studios. Your card is part of your portfolio. Soft-touch is one of the most direct ways to telegraph craft.

Design tips for soft-touch
- Pair with thick stock. Soft-touch on 14pt feels less special than on 16pt or 18pt. The whole point is the tactile premium, so the card needs the weight to match.
- Dark colors look richest. Black, deep navy, forest green, oxblood, and chocolate all photograph beautifully with soft-touch.
- Use spot UV for contrast. Spot UV applied to a logo, monogram, or accent on a soft-touch card creates one of the most distinctive finish pairings in print.
- Test contact info legibility. Because soft-touch slightly mutes color, fine grey text on dark backgrounds can lose contrast. Keep contact info bold and high-contrast.

FAQs
- What does soft-touch laminate feel like?
- Soft-touch is the closest you can get to the feel of velvet, suede, or peach skin in a print finish. The surface has a warm, almost cushioned quality that is immediately distinct from any standard coated card. Most people describe it as silky or rubberized in a refined way.
- Is soft-touch the same as matte lamination?
- No. Soft-touch is a specific subtype of matte lamination engineered for a velvet tactile surface. Standard matte lamination feels smooth and matte; soft-touch feels velvety. Soft-touch costs more than standard matte lamination because of the specialized film.
- Does soft-touch show fingerprints?
- Light oils can show as faint smudges on dark soft-touch cards, especially black or deep navy designs. The effect is most visible in raking light. Most users find the tactile premium feel worth the trade-off. Lighter design colors hide smudges almost completely.
- Can I spot UV on a soft-touch card?
- Yes. Spot UV applied over a soft-touch laminated card is one of the most striking premium combinations in print. The glossy spot UV pops sharply against the velvet matte background. Common pairing: black soft-touch card with spot UV logo or accent.
- When is soft-touch worth the cost?
- Soft-touch is worth it when the card itself is part of the brand experience. Luxury real estate listings, high-end consultants, hospitality concierge, premium consumer goods, attorneys, executives, and design-led agencies all benefit. If the recipient never notices the card, you do not need soft-touch.
- Does soft-touch protect the card?
- Yes. Like all lamination, the soft-touch film bonds plastic to the paper and protects the card from moisture, minor scuffs, and corner damage. It is the durability of standard matte lamination with a different tactile surface.
